The National Museum of Western Art (Main Building) was designed by Le Corbusier (1887-1965; birth name: Charles-Édouard Jeanneret), the great master of modern architecture of the 20th century. In 2016, it was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. This exhibition is held to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the opening of this museum.

ル・コルビュジエRight inside the exhibition room is “the 19th century hall.”

ル・コルビュジエThrough the triangle-shaped windows on the ceiling comes the soft light of nature.

The National Museum of Western Art, which opened in 1959, is the one and only building designed by Le Corbusier in Japan. In 2016, 17 projects by Corbusier in seven countries were registered as World Heritage sites, including this museum.

ル・コルビュジエ

Le Corbusier was an artist who worked in different fields; not only in architecture but also in painting, sculpture, poetry, tapestry, urban planning, publication, and interior designing.

ル・コルビュジエ
This exhibition features the period in which Le Corbusier promoted “Purism” in Paris, the world center of art. It takes a retrospective look at his works from the late 1910s to the early 1930s, when he came out into the world at large.

The exhibition is a precious opportunity to appreciate his art inside an architectural artwork designed by himself. Won’t you visit and feel the spirit of Le Cotbusier in a space constructed by the artist himself?
