“Family Gallery Samurai Mania! Explore Japanese Armor” is being held at Tokyo National Museum in Ueno from July 17 (Wed) till September 23 (Mon), 2019.
A Close-up Look at Samurai Armor from Head to Toe!
Japanese armor was meant to protect samurai on the battlefield, and samurai valued armor for its strength and utility. Samurai also appreciated armor’s aesthetic value, choosing finely crafted sets that incorporated vivid colors and novel designs.
This exhibition features actual samurai armor alongside modern reproductions of the armor’s individual components. Visitors will be able to closely examine each part of samurai armor.

This work was made about 500 years ago. Reproductions of the kusazuri part that protects the waist of the armor are also on display.

Right, card-like parts made of leather called kozane are layered; center, parts painted with lacquer are connected horizontally; left, parts are connected with silk braid vertically.

Seeing up close the details of the parts and the armor, you can visually understand the armor with various materials and techniques.

The part of chest protector changes with the times
Not only this exhibition but the related exhibition “Samurai Mania! Explore Japanese Armor at TNM” will be held from July 17 (Wed) to September 1 (Sun). It is a hands-on exhibit where you can actually touch modern reproductions of armor and wear a helmet.
