The Kanto Matsuri Festival, one of the major festivals of Tokoku, takes place in Akita City every August. At night, as many as 250 performers use long bamboo poles to hoist aloft and balance – on their foreheads, hips, and shoulders – a large number of big lighted lanterns as they parade through the streets. The performance requires much strength and skill and the many spectators thrill at the spectacle, which is accompanied by taiko drum-beating and fifes. Akita City’s Senshu Park is a famous cherry blossom site.
