MASHIKO TOWN

Mashiko Town is world famous for its production of pottery, referred to as Mashiko-yaki, which has rich color shades and a polished ,smooth texture. The Pottery Fair held in the spring and autumn sees tons of people looking for everyday pottery items, as well as for works of art.
At the Shoji Hamada Memorial Mashiko Sankokan Museum, there are many works of art on display from the collection of the living national treasure, potter Shoji Hamada. Fans of pottery will have their interest spurred by attractions such as the Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art, the Old Hamada House and the Ceramic Art Messe Mashiko, where you can view up-close the favorite“climbing kilns” of Shoji Hamada. With all the kilns and shops specializing in pottery in this town, you can also try a hands-on experience for yourself in the making of the ceramic art that is Mashikoyaki.
If you are interested in knowing more about Mashiko-yaki, visit the Mashiko Togei Bijutsukan (a pottery museum) and Mashiko Sankokan (The Mashiko Reference Collection Museum). When you are ready for a rest, why not have a cup of coffee served in a Mashiko-yaki cup? There are many tasty cafes and bakeries in town.

The famous December-to-May strawberry picking allows you to enjoy as much of the sweet, freshly-picked strawberries as you want. Throughout the year, you may also enjoy the picking of other fruit such as pears, apples and grapes.
