■Recommended Summer Destinations Surrounding Mt. Fuji

At the foot of Mt. Fuji, the Hanano Miyako Koen (Flower Garden) is located between Lake Yamanakako and Lake Kawaguchiko. Covering 300,000 square meters, this popular destination is filled with various flowers in bloom in each season with Mt. Fuji as the background. Baby’s-breath, poppies, and zinnia bloom between the months of June and July. Sunflowers are best seen in August. To get to the Hanano Miyako Koen, take a local bus to the Hanano Miyako Koen bus stop at the Fujisan Station via the Fujikyuko Line.

Located in the north of Lake Kawaguchiko, Oishi Park is another great destination to visit in the summer. The borders of Lake Kawaguchiko are blanketed with lavender fields during the middle of June through the middle of July. Bask in the spectacular views of Mt. Fuji. There is a café located in the Kawaguchiko Shizen Seikatukan building. Here you can enjoy terraced-seats, taste their famous blueberry soft ice cream, and feel the refreshing breeze of Mt. Fuji. There is fruit picking available, which is provided by the local farmers: cherry picking (available at the end of June through the middle of July) and blueberry picking (available at the beginning of July through the middle of August). To get to Oishi Park, take a local bus to the Kawaguchiko-Shizen seikatsukan bus stop at the Kawaguchiko Station via the Fujikyuko Line.

■Climbing Mt. Fuji

Climbing Mt. Fuji is a great way to experience nature and learn about the history of the mountain. Or you can soak in the awe-inspiring views from a distance. The climbing season starts in the beginning of July and ends in the middle of September. There are four different trails leading to the summit. The Yoshida Trail is the most popular. With its many mountain huts and lodgings, even beginners can climb Mt. Fuji. During sunset you can see gigantic mountain shape shadows being cast by Mt. Fuji. The sunrise from the peak is truly breathtaking. Preparation is the key to having a wonderful and safe climb up Mt. Fuji. Please research the mountain, the trail you will be taking, and the proper gear that you will need. The temperature at the peak during mid-summer averages around 5℃. Since there are very few trees on the mountain trails leading to the peak, wind and rain can affect the conditions of the climbing. For more information about climbing Mt. Fuji, please visit the official web site. (http://www.fujisan-climb.jp/en/index.html).
