Come and Experience New Tokyo Station

Tokyo Station, the terminal station with the most number of platforms in Japan, is going to be born again this autumn. Along with the completion of the preservation and restoration of the Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building, designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan, renewal of various other facilities has been completed. Now is a great time to enjoy Tokyo Station!

Opening of JR EAST Travel Service Center JR EAST Travel Service Center in Tokyo Station will offer extensive services especially to foreign travelers to Japan. Visitors can purchase optional tours at Travel Counters as well as redeeming JR EAST PASS and various ticketing arrangements. The center includes a Tourist Information Center, Foreign Exchange, ATMs, and a Baggage Service Counter for the convenience and comfort of travelers in Japan.

Completion of the preservation and restoration of Marunouchi Station Building and nighttime illuminations begin On the completion of the preservation and restoration of the Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building, nighttime illumination of the station building will begin. The illuminations will be turned on at sunset and gradually dimmed starting at about 9 p.m., creating different appearances of the building in the process.

Opening of Central Street The commercial Central Street will be along central passage of the first floor of Tokyo Station. The concept of Central Street is “Link Japan,” dedicated to become the link between the metropolitan and local areas in Japan and abroad. The large facility comprises 3 zones; the “Station Select Zone” selling an extensive selection of foods including boxed lunches (bento) from famous restaurants and bakeries as well as trendy goods, the “Ekiben Store” selling exclusive boxed lunches to eat on the train (ekiben) and the “Gift Zone” filled with not only souvenirs and gift items but also famous confections and sweets you can enjoy during your travels.

Tokyo Station Gallery The Tokyo Station Gallery originally opened in 1988 and will be re-opened after a renovation based on the concept of “a small but authentic art museum.” The entrance to the three-story gallery is on the first floor, the second floor, the “historic floor,” exhibits art within the original brick walls of Tokyo Station, and the third “contemporary floor” is a contemporary exhibition space. Various exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, architecture, design and more are scheduled for the gallery with the expectation to be a place where people can enjoy formal art.

Opening of the Renewed Tokyo Station Hotel The historic hotel that opened in 1915 has undergone renewal. A new page in the history of this unique hotel begins and has the same dignified elegance of the station building, a designated Important Cultural Property of Japan. The cozy interior of the hotel incorporates elements of its history with modern design in harmony with the station building in the European Classical style. Tokyo Station is born again to be more convenient and attractive to travelers. It’s not only a place to pass through in a hurry to catch a train. Take advantage of the convenience and comfort for travelers available at the new Tokyo Station and enjoy your travel in Japan even more.
