CultureFishing in Okinawa

Surrounded by coral reefs and blessed with a warm climate, Okinawa has a large variety and number of fish species, attracting people who enjoy fishing. The temperature of the water goes above 25 degrees Celsius in summer, so different types of fish can be caught in summer and winter. The area has many large fish, providing a perfect place both for casual fishing by beginners and children as well as full-scale fishing, such as trolling for marlin and mahi-mahi (dolphin fish), and single-hook fishing of bluefin tuna.

Breathtaking Pull by the Large Fish

If you want to catch large fish, like tuna, but don’t want to do full-scale fishing, try “payao” (artificial fish reef) fishing. Payao is a type of fish aggregating device consisting of anchors and buoys placed at an offshore spot with a water depth of at least 1,000 meters. You have to take a charter boat to get to payao, but if you are lucky, you may be able to catch large fish, such as tuna, skipjack tuna (bonito), and mahi-mahi, of over 40 kilograms on your own. Once you experience the powerful pull of large fish, you will know fishing is a real fight with a fish.
