Snowshoe Trekking

Snowshoes enable anyone to walk on snow effortlessly, allowing for enjoyable snow hiking. You can follow the foot prints left by animals on the sparkling white surface, and thereafter enjoy tea or lunch break surrounded by snow capped mountains. On the night tours organized by Ikenotaira Onsen (Ikenotaira Onsen, Niigata Pref. 0255-86-2871), this mysterious winter scenery is on full display. ●●

Snowmobile / Snow rafting / Airboarding

Snowmobiles, small two-seated snow vehicles, are available for rental. Various plans are on offer, ranging from five-minute trial rides to hour-long tours. Dash down trails while enjoying the wonderful natural view. Also available is Snow rafting, where a rafting board is pulled by a snowmobile: the feeling you get caused by centrifugal force when you make turns is very thrilling. Finally, airboarding is an advanced form of sledding. You lie on an inflatable sled like it’s a body board and get to enjoy the sensation of speed. Since you lie on your belly, you have no fear of falling off to the ground like in skiing or snowboarding. You can learn to airboard simply by attending a half day or day-long training tour. ●●

Ski Lessons

Ski lessons are offered in many ski resorts in Japan. Even though the lessons are conducted in Japanese, children usually learn to ski in just half a day or so. ●●
