At Hakkoda, on April 1 as roads are opened after the winter closure, “snow walls” can be seen along Route 103 between Suka-yu Onsen and Yachi, a remarkable sight to see. In this area, though April may theoretically be spring, there is still plenty of snow on the ground and you can enjoy skiing or a snow hike. Nearby Hakkoda is the famous Suka-yu Onsen hot spring with its “sennin-buro,” or “thousand person bath” – a good place to thoroughly relax and warm your body after a day’s activity, as is also Tsuta Onsen near Oirase Keiryu valley.
