Weekly Column Kanda This and That 302
Thank you for coming back.
It will soon be 10 years since I became a member of this family in Kanda! I started joining the community’s activities several years ago, and this year I finally attended the new-year party! Since we are in Kanda, the party was held at Kanda Myojin Shrine. At 16:00 on January 12 (Sat), about 80 people gathered at the shrine. We first took off our shoes and went inside the building. With the sound of koto (Japanese harp) played by miko (female attendant) in the background, we prayed and received blessings from shinshoku (the person responsible for performing rituals and clerical works for a shrine). Sitting on the tatami floor Japanese style (called seiza) and facing the deities has a sobering effect on me.
Later, we moved to the Myojin-kaikan hall on the grounds to have a party, where delicious dishes arrived at our tables one after another. Delicious! By the way, this place was the prime candidate for having our wedding party 10 years ago! I planned to have a Japanese wedding ceremony followed by a party at this Myojin-kaikan hall, but due to a scheduling conflict, it didn’t come true. I wanted to wear shiromuku (a white wedding kimono)… But at this community new-year party, I could finally enter the building and offer prayers at Kanda Myojin and have a feast after 10 years. This year should be great! As for wearing shiromuku, well, I guess it would be impossible to make it come true…. Anyways, I want “sweet 10 diamonds,” one diamond for each year in marriage, for our 10th year anniversary!
