The Wide-Open Land of the North! Cycling in Hokkaido
Hokkaido, with its extensive land area, is cool even in the summer. In the spring and fall, it doesn’t have much rainfall or many typhoons, which makes it a perfect place for cycling. Hokkaido’s roads are spacious by nature in order to accommodate snow removal and many of these roads are well-maintained. There also isn’t much traffic or many traffic lights, making your journey more enjoyable. Below are two recommended spots in Hokkaido to choose for your next cycling route!
Yoteizan Round-trip Route (Ezoichi Course)Yoteizan (Mt. Yotei) in Niseko is called “Hokkaido’s Mt. Fuji” and is one of Japan’s “One Hundred Famous Mountains.” How about enjoying the freedom of refreshing Hokkaido-style cycling while gazing at Mt. Yotei’s verdant greenery? There is a 55km circular cycling route available, which is mostly flat despite a few climbs and descents. The ride with the mountain on your left is recommended.

Here you can watch the cows and ostriches graze on the pastures, as well as feed the ostriches (100 yen)! Places to Visit
Found at the northernmost extremity of the route, this mountain pass is the highest point of Hokkaido’s national highway, at 1,130 meters in elevation. The soft-serve ice cream and hand-dripped house roasted coffee served at the “Mikuni-toge Cafe” next to the observation deck are very popular!
This is a very popular spot found at the peak of Mikuni-toge and known for its picturesque scenery. The bridge is 30 meters tall and 330 meters long, cutting through dense woodlands of virgin forest. It features a beautiful form and is surrounded by majestic nature.
Taushubetsu River Bridge
Formerly a bridge along the Japan National Railways Shihoro Line, Taushubetsu River Bridge is a concrete arch bridge which used to serve as a route for coal transportation. You can see it completely covered in snow and ice in January and early February. From August to October it is completely submerged by the lake, so planning the dates of your visit carefully is important.
The path through the forest around the bridge has a gate which is locked. In order to visit the Taushubetsu River Bridge area, you must join a paid tour organized by the NPO Higashitaisetsu Nature Guide Center. Another option is to borrow a key from the Tokachi Seibu Shinrin Kanrisho (Forest Office) Higashitaisetsu Substation, located in Kamishihoro-cho.
Taushubetsu Observation Deck
At around 750 meters from Taushubetsu River Bridge, it is a bit of a walk but you are able to observe not just the bridge but the entire surrounding area.
