Recommended outdoor activities you should try in the Tohoku region!

Facing the Pacific Ocean on the east side and the Japan Sea on the west side, the Tohoku region is rich in natural tourism resources with many mountains, rivers, and lakes in the inland area. There are so many ways to enjoy Tohoku, but we will feature some local tours for outdoor activities, where you can enjoy the unique sights and natural scenery of Tohoku while doing physical activities and enjoying a feeling of adventure.

An RIB, or “rigid inflatable boat, is a high-performance, unsinkable rubber boat that is used by the navy, rescue teams, and polar expedition groups all over the world as it can go to areas with harsh natural environments.

On this tour, you can access the special protected area surrounded by the steep cliffs of Lake Towada, the largest double caldera lake in the world, which is inaccessible by regular boat. Go around to enjoy natural scenery of ancient ruins and caves, and places where you may see wild animals, such as bears and golden eagles. When the boat travels a long distance, it speeds up so much that you will feel as if you are flying! It is exciting and thrilling!

Rafting at Mogami-gawa River, Yamagata Prefecture


In the middle and upper river basin on the Mogami-gawa River, which is said to be one of the three most rapid streams in Japan, you can enjoy rafting.

The route dramatically ranges in speed, with some raging torrents and some gentle streams. You can enjoy rafting differently according to the water level on the day, which is affected by melting snow in spring, raining on the previous day, dryness after a few clear days, etc.

SUP tour at Matsushima, Miyagi Prefecture


With an increasing popularity all over the world, SUP (Sand Up Paddleboard) is a water activity, where you stand on a board, keep your balance, and go forward by paddling. Matsushima, ranked one of the “Three Fine Views of Japan,” is an excellent place for SUP, with calm waves and little influence of wind.

You can enjoy a view not available from the land but accessible from “walking” on the sea. There are various courses, including a beginner course, advanced course, half-day course, and full-day course.

Kayaking at Lake Tazawa, Akita Prefecture


If you look at Lake Tazawa, the deepest lake in Japan, the water surface is very clear and the color changes according to the depth, green at shallow parts and blue at deeper parts. The color also changes as the angle of the sun changes.

In this tour, you can ride a kayak and feel the mysteriousness of Lake Tazawa up-close. From the kayak on the lake, you can also have a great seasonal view around the lake.

Canoeing at Lake Hibara, Fukushima Prefecture


A canoe touring of Lake Hibara, which was created by the eruption of Mount Bandai. The route of the tour is varied, whereby you can get a panoramic view of the grand Mount Bandai reflected on the lake surface, while at the bay with its irregular coastline you can feel thrilled and excited, just like Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise.

If you join a course with lunch, you can enjoy outdoor dishes, such as chicken and potatoes seasoned with salt and pepper and cooked in a Dutch oven. It will feel like camping – or at least a BBQ!

Sea Kayaking at Jodogahama, Iwate Prefecture


At Jodogahama, one of the famous sites along the Sanriku Coast, you can enjoy sea kayaking and feel overwhelmed by the unusual rock formations seen close-up. You can go around the back of Jodogahama, which is accessible only by kayak, to explore the area with sea caves here and there and observe close up black-tailed gulls and seagulls. You can enjoy the Jodogahama geosite. At one of the sea caves, you may be able to see bats!

Paragliding at Matsushima, Miyagi Prefecture


Fly over the ocean for 10 minutes to enjoy the view from above! Flying in the wind over 200 meters up in the sky, you will feel as if you have become a bird. The view of Matsushima, ranked one of the “Three Fine Views of Japan,” from above is just magnificent! You can have a great view of the vast expanse of the Sendai Plain as well as the Zao Mountains and Oshika Peninsula in the distance.
