he Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is a world-renowned mountain tourism route that provides beautiful natural scenery in each season. (The route is closed from the end of November through the end of April.) The Ptarmigan and Japanese serow, which are designated as a species at risk, inhabit this area.
In autumn there are many scenic spots where visitors can experience the beautiful autumn foliage. A fun part of traveling the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is the various modes of transportation you can take when exploring, such as trolley, cable car, and ropeway.
Tateyama Town Area
One suggested route to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is from the Toyama Prefecture. Go to the Hokuriku Shinkansen Toyama Station and take the Toyama Chiho Railroad bound to the Tateyama Station, which is the gateway to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.
Near Tateyama Station is the Shomyo Falls, the tallest waterfall in Japan. It is designated as a national natural monument. Witnessing the cloud spray of water dropping at 350 meters is a powerful experience.
Next, take the cable car from the Tateyama Station to Bijodaira. Then take a bus from Bijodaira to Murodo. If you want to experience autumn foliage in the mountains, stop by Midagahara. It is an alpine plateau located at an altitude of approximately 1,600 to 2,100 meters, stretching 3 km north to south and 9 km from east to west. In early October visitors can enjoy mountain trekking and the surrounding majestic autumn colors of the mountains.
Located at an altitude of 2,450 meters, the Murodo area is the highest point on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. There are various trails, paths, and sites that you can explore in Murodo, such as the Murododaira lava plateau, and Mikurigaike pond, a crater lake that is known as one of the most beautiful ponds in the Northern Japanese Alps.
Next, board the trolley bus through the Tateyama tunnels from Murodo to Daikanbo. Then take the ropeway from Daikanbo to Kurobedaira. The views from the ropeway are breathtaking. The autumn foliage of Tateyama are truly spectacular.
Next, take the cable car from Kurobedaira to Kurobeko (Lake Kurobe). Here you can see the Kurobe Dam, Japan’ s highest arch dam. Enjoy the splendid views of the mountains from the observation deck. One of the highlights of the Kurobe Dam is to witness the discharge of over 10 tons of water per second from the dam. Every year the attraction takes place from June 26 through October 15. Depending on the time of a day, rainbows can be seen arching on the huge blast of water,
adding a majestic beauty to the surrounding panoramas.
Omachi City Area
Board the trolley bus from Kurobe Dam to Ogizawa, the last stop of Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, in the Nagano Prefecture. Ogizawa is surrounded by Ushirotateyama Mountains, and its autumn foliage in the mountains reaches its peak from the middle to the end of October. Travel to the Tateyama Kurobe Apline Route is possible via the opposite route mentioned above, which starts from Ogizawa through the Toyama Prefecture.
After enjoying your journey, you can visit one of the hot springs to relax your body. Omachi City is the home to many hot springs. A local bus is available from Ogizawa. Located in the valley of the Takase River side, Kuzu Onsen is known for its splendid views of autumn foliage. Their open-air bath provides stunning views.
