The Sumida River Fireworks Festival has a long history, beginning in 1733. Many people died of starvation and contagious diseases in the great famine of that time. The Tokugawa Shogunate held a ceremony to pray for the souls of victims and drive away evil diseases. About 20,000 fireworks are launched against the backdrop of TOKYO SKYTREE®.
