JAPANESE SENTO BATHHOUSESWhat exactly is a sento?A sento is a type of public bathhouse in Japan, where traditional culture meets modern-day well-being. It’s more than just a place to get clean—it’s a space to relax, connect with the local community, and appreciate an often distinctive building appearance and interior design. Many sento are family-run businesses, passed down through generations, preserving a deep-rooted cultural heritage. Onsen hot springs are generally naturally heated, while sento generally use groundwater that is heated artificially when necessary. However, depending on the region, the water source for sento can also be geothermal or volcanic in origin. Writer: Stephanie CrohinOfficially appointed as a Sento Ambassador by the Japan Sento Cultural Association. She actively shares the charm of sento culture with the world through various activities, such as lectures, books, and TV programs. The charms of the sento1. Health and beautyRegular sento visits offer numerous health benefits. The hot water improves blood circu-lation, relieves muscle tension, and supports skin health. Stretching in the warm water can further boost flexibility and promote relaxation. Mentally, the bathhouse serves as a healing space—a place to soothe both body and mind. Without digital distractions, the sounds of flowing water and echoing tiles create a quiet and calm atmosphere. 2. CommunityThe sento is a hub for the local community. Regulars become familiar faces, and even first-time visitors are welcomed with warmth. Many owners look out for the well-being of their elderly customers—at one sento I know, the owner even calls to check in if some-one doesn’t show up on a hot summer day. The sento fosters “hadaka no tsukiai” (naked socializing) where everyone connects on equal footing, regardless of background or status.3. ArtArt is an integral part of the sento experience. From Mt. Fuji murals to hand-painted tiles, each bathhouse offers something unique. In recent years, local artists have collabo-rated with sento owners to create contemporary murals, giving rise to a new wave of bath-house art. This fusion of tradition and innovation keeps the artistic culture of sento alive and evolving.10錢湯的魅力之處1. Experience TraditionalJapanese Sento Bathhouses!
