The Tokyu Toyoko Line connects Shibuya and Yokohama Station in about 30 minutes. Beyond its obvious convenience, the fascinating point about this train track is how dramatically environments change just a few stops from Shibuya. The Nakameguro, Yutenji, and Gakugeidaigaku districts may only be a few minutes from the bustling hub, but offer a laid-back local vibe that promises exciting encounters around every corner.
Nakameguro
In springtime, Nakameguro is renowned for the rows of cherry blossom trees lining both sides of the Meguro River. Beyond the riverbanks are many other great spots for a stroll. For over 700 meters under the elevated railway, the streets are lined with shops such as bookstores and restaurants. Venture into the shopping districts and down the laneways to discover unique shops selling customizable notebooks, workshops on handmade crafts and much more. For one-of-a-kind souvenirs, there’s no better place.

Gakugeidaigaku
The only neighborhood in Japan ranked in “The World’s Coolest Cities” 2024 by the UK’s Time Out magazine. Although the eponymous university (Gakugei University) has moved, the name remains unchanged due to the affection of the local community.
Altogether, six shopping streets are centered around the station, lined with shops frequented by locals for years and years. Drawn by the town’s warm and welcoming culture, the number of new stores popping up here seems to be increasing.

Yutenji
Yutenji station, between Nakameguro and Gakugei Daigaku, is not an express train stop, which makes it a little quieter, with a more local flair. Julien, a Belgian writer who loves Yutenji, will share his favorite ways to spend time here!
My favorite Yutenji
When I feel like spending a quiet afternoon, I like to go for a walk in the Yutenji district. Located just a few stops from Shibuya station on the Tokyu Toyoko line, this residential neighborhood has a calm, relaxed atmosphere.
There are also a few hidden nuggets to delight food lovers. If you’re with the family, I highly recommend Curry Station Niagara, where Japanese curry dishes are served by a little electric train!
After strolling around the neighborhood, I love to take a break at SIDEWALK COFFEE, which has been converted into an old Japanese house. I take the opportunity to read a bit and enjoy their homemade coffee with bitter orange syrup. A real treat!
My day usually ends with a visit to the Yutenji temple, which gives its name to the district. This place is a true haven of peace. In spring, the temple’s many cherry blossom trees also offer a magnificent sight.
