More than 50 bonbais with red and white plum trees are displayed at the exhibition; they are fostered with care by Mr. Sadatsugu Takahashi of Taihakuen, a bonsai craftsman who is featured in「 “att.KANASAI issue 10 (page 6), a bound-in insert in att.JAPAN issue 86”」.

The venue is filled with various kinds of bonbais whose white, pale red, pink, and deep red blossoms are captivating. Also, you can enjoy the delicate scent of the flowers that is usually difficult to capture outside.

The weeping plum trees of 2m in height are an incredible site to see.

It is nature’s art, composed of decaying whitish old trees, and growing young trees. Amongst the different precious trees, the oldest ones are more than 200 years old.

At the sword exhibition, which is held at the same time, you can discover a number of swords that belonged to historical personages, who had close relationships with Michizane Sugawara, a bureaucrat, poet, and scholar in 9th century to whom this shrine is dedicated.

During the festival, there are plum-themed events including an open-air café and souvenir shops. The Ninja Parade from Ninja no sato (Iga city in Mie prefecture) will take place on March 2 (Sat), and a free ume-mochi (pastry filled with sweet bean paste) giveaway will be held from 10:00 am on March 3 (Sun).

Osaka Tenmangu Shrine is a perfect place to spend a laid-back day while enjoying the plum blossoms which are the herald of springtime in Japan.
