Accessible from central Tokyo on a little side trip, the Tama area is a place where you can enjoy different aspects of Tokyo, including quiet residential areas and spacious parks as well as the wilderness of mountains and valleys. Rent a bicycle at the station area and you can easily enjoy the scenery around town.
This course takes about three hours on flat terrain, so you can get around easily!

Visit this historical temple founded in 733. The temple enshrines the oldest Shaka Nyorai statue in eastern Japan, which was designated as a national treasure. There are many restaurants serving Jindaiji specialty soba noodles nearby, making it a perfect place for lunch.
Bicycle parking is located in the Jindai Botanical Garden next to the temple.

This course features the harmony between the quiet residential area and nature. The middle of the course was used for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics cycling event!

Gundam and Char’s Zaku statues stand guard in front of the facility, at about 3.6 meters tall!
These statues were completed in 2016, as part of the “Mechanic Designer Kunio Okawara Project” promoted by Inagi City. Kunio Okawara, the mechanical designer for Mobile Suit Gundam, is from Inagi, and the project aims to promote community revitalization for the city.
You can also see a life-size statue of “Scope Dog” from the anime series “Armored Trooper Votoms” in front of the center. Minami-Tama Station (JR) features a statue of the dog-shaped robot “Yatter-Wan” from the “Yatterman” anime series. Here and there you can also see manhole covers with designs by Kunio Okawara across the city.

A bicycle-sharing service available all over Japan. Register as a free member through its website or app, and you can rent and return a bicycle at any one of the designated ports. There are ports in Inagi and Tama cities, so it is an ideal way to tour the area.

Opened in 2019, this wagashi (Japanese sweets) shop is well known among the locals. One of the most popular items is the cute cat-shaped “Monyaka,” with a generous amount of sweet red bean paste sandwiched between two thin crisp wafers.

The bank of the river with its great view is super for cycling! You can take a break with the cute “Monyaka” cat-shaped sweet treats in one of the parks along the river.
As the name indicates, Sakura-dori Street, connecting the area around Seiseki-sakuragaoka Station and the Tama River, is lined with cherry trees, creating a fragrant pink tunnel in spring.
Around the station, you can see here and there manhole covers featuring designs from the anime series “Rascal the Raccoon.” Coming across the cute Rascal is sure to bring a smile. No surprise then that the head studio of “Nippon Animation Co., Ltd.,” the creator of “Rascal the Raccoon” and “A Dog of Flanders,” is located in Tama City.
The city is also the setting of the Studio Ghibli movie “Whisper of the Heart.” Perfect for anime fans!
