Facing the Sea of Japan, Iki Island is an easy one-hour trip by hydrofoil from Fukuoka’s Hakata Port, yet remains a largely hidden gem of natural beauty with a chill, laid-back vibe. Here, we look at the island’s best spots for all kinds of fun, from sake to fine foods, stunning views, and adventure!
A new sake from the island birthplace of barley shochu? It’s bound to be great. According to legend, roughly five centuries ago, when rice prices were dear, people on Iki began making shochu with barley instead. The practice spread throughout Kyushu, and now koji (a fermenting agent) from barley is commonly used for barley shochu. In Iki, however, the traditional method of using rice koji has been preserved. From this island of diehard brewers now comes a new kind of sake.
Nihonshu (Japanese sake) from Omoya Shuzo Brewery
The only sake producer on Iki Island. Brewing Japan’s classic “rice wine,” also known as nihonshu, boomed in Iki in the 1990s, but over time, many breweries shut down. Among these, Omoya Shuzo Brewery was reopened in 2018 after a 28-year hiatus. Now the “juicy” beloved brands such as Yokoyama Goju and Yokoyama SILVER are back with their sweet, fruity flavors.
Iki’s only brewery aims to create “the best beer in Japan to pair with seafood cuisine. ” White koji, also used in Iki shochu, mixes with island-grown yuzu citrus and Akoya pearl oyster extract to produce unique brews. The taproom attached to the brewery serves freshly brewed beer along with dishes created in collaboration with local izakaya pubs and nearby shopping streets.
