Narashika Train (Kintetsu Railway)

This wrapped train mainly runs between Kintetsu-Nara Station and Kobe-Sannomiya Station. Inspired by the many deer that roam freely in Nara Park, the train is filled with deer-themed details — not only on the exterior, but also inside, where you’ll find deer-patterned seats, deer-shaped hand straps, and even seats designed to make passengers look like deer when they sit down. You’ll be amazed at just how many deer motifs you can spot!
If you’re traveling from Osaka toward Nara, it’s convenient to board from Osaka-Namba Station. The operation schedule isn’t published, so you’ll be lucky if you catch it!

The highlight you shouldn’t miss is the hand straps. They’re designed so that the loops resemble “shika senbei” (deer crackers), playfully creating the illusion that the deer are nibbling on them!

Tango AKA-MATSU Train (Kyoto Tango Railway)

Running through the northern parts of Kyoto and Hyogo prefectures, the Kyoto Tango Railway offers sightseeing trains with charming retro-modern exteriors and elegant interiors. On the cafe train “Tango Aka-Matsu,” which connects Nishi-Maizuru and Amanohashidate, you can enjoy light meals and coffee while taking in breathtaking views of the Sea of Japan along the route. Don’t miss the chance to snap photos of the tracks and scenery from the rear window of the last car! Passing over the Yura River Bridge in particular feels like you’re gliding above the sea.

Riding the Tango Aka-Matsu is also a great way to visit Amanohashidate, one of Japan’s Three Most Scenic Spots. The long, narrow sandbar is said to resemble a dragon ascending to the sky and is believed to bring good fortune. In winter, you might even catch a magical view of the snow-covered landscape. While the Tango Aka-Matsu requires a reservation, the Tango Ao-Matsu runs daily without one.

Medetai Train (Nankai Electric Railway)

The “Medetai Train” runs between Wakayamashi Station and Kada Station in Wakayama Prefecture. This colorful sightseeing train, available in five different hues, is modeled after the “tai” (sea bream). In Japan, the sea bream is considered a symbol of good fortune and celebration, and it also happens to be a local specialty of the Kada area. Each train has its own theme: “Sachi,” said to bring good luck in love; “Kai,” inspired by the sea; “Nana,” decorated with lucky charms like a spiritual “power spot”; “Kashira,” evoking a sense of adventure; and “Kanata,” carrying a message that connects the past and the future.
