Hot springs, cocktails, & sparkling night views! A grown-up’s guide to Kobe

The exotic port city of Kobe City in Hyogo Prefecture is easily reached in just 30 minutes by train from Osaka. The city has a refined sense of style that sets it apart to some extent from Osaka or Kyoto, making it a perfect luxury destination for sophisticated travelers.

Arima Onsen

This legendary hot spring town is an easy trip, roughly an hour from Kobe Airport by public transportation or 30 minutes from the Shinkansen stop of Shin-Kobe Station. “Kinsen” and “Ginsen” are the two renowned types of hot springs that make the area truly special.

Kin no Yu / Gin no Yu

These two public baths offer the chance to indulge in Kinsen and Ginsen respectively. At Kin no Yu, soak in the auburn waters of the viscous Kinsen; at Gin no Yu, sink into a clear, colorless, smooth flowing bath of Ginsen. Set tickets are a great way to enjoy both.

Nada sake brewery tour

“Miyamizu,” the ground water ideal for sake brewing, and “Yamada Nishiki,” the reputed “king of sake rice,” have synergized to make Kobe’s Nada Gogo region one of the top sake brewing areas in the Kansai region since the Edo period (1603-1868). Even today, numerous historical sake breweries dot the area. Many offer tours, sake tastings, and the chance to purchase sake, so look for your favorite sake and take a tour to see how it’s made.
