KAKUNODATE
Kakunodate was founded as a castle town in 1620. It is famous for retaining even today samurai residences and traditional street blocks from those days long gone by.
Like Hirosaki, it is one of the premier cherry blossom-viewing places in Tohoku. In spring, the color contrast of the traditional black residential walls and the pink blossoms of the dropping cherry trees makes a striking scene. In the samurai house district there are some 400 cherry trees of the dropping variety and some of them are aged 300 years or more. Also, along the Hinokinai River, 200 cherry trees of the someiyoshino type form a cherry blossom tunnel on the banks of the river.
