Fukuoka Tower & Momochi Beach

Standing along the waterfront, the 234-meter-tall Fukuoka Tower is a landmark that symbolizes Fukuoka City, where the sea and the cityscape sit side by side. From the observation deck 123 meters above ground, you can enjoy sweeping views of Fukuoka’s skyline and Hakata Bay. At its base stretches a seaside park featuring a striking white-sand beach.

From the Editorial Team:
The tower’s exterior is covered with 8,000 half-mirrored panels that reflect the colors of the sky and sea, giving it a different appearance depending on the time of day and weather. It’s also a well-known spot for viewing the sunset.

What’s the difference between Fukuoka and Hakata?
Within Fukuoka City, there is an area called Hakata, which historically flourished as a merchants’ district. Even today, many festivals and traditions are passed down under the name “Hakata.”

Must-Try Local Foods in Fukuoka

Blessed with both ocean and mountain bounty, Fukuoka is one of Japan’s top food destinations. Here are some local specialties you won’t want to miss.

Tonkotsu Ramen

A true icon of Fukuoka cuisine! Its rich, creamy white pork-bone broth pairs perfectly with thin noodles.

From the Editorial Team:
If you’re still hungry, try “kaedama,” an extra serving of noodles you can add to your remaining soup.

Motsu Nabe

A hearty hot pot made with beef or pork offal simmered with vegetables in a soy sauce– or miso-based broth. The bold flavors of garlic and chives make it a great match for alcoholic drinks, and a good stamina-boosting meal even in the hot season.

Amaou Strawberries

This premium local strawberry brand is known for its rich sweetness balanced with a pleasant tartness, as well as its delightfully large size that makes each bite especially satisfying.

From the Editorial Team:
You’ll also find plenty of desserts made with Amaou. Our top recommendation is Doraking Ace, a dorayaki filled with Amaou mousse and strawberry pieces. You can find it at Hakata and Kokura stations, and in downtown Tenjin. During the peak season from mid-November to late May, the Doraking Nama (Fresh) series, which contains a whole Amaou strawberry, also becomes available!

Try Visiting a Yatai Stall!

When it comes to Fukuoka, yatai food stalls are a must-visit. In the evening, more than 100 stalls pop up mainly around the Nakasu and Tenjin areas. Enjoy ramen, yakitori, and drinks while chatting with fellow customers and the stall owners.

Located west of Fukuoka City, Itoshima has gained attention as a relaxing resort destination rich in natural beauty. The coastline is dotted with stunning viewpoints and stylish cafes, perfect for a refreshing drive along the sea. Renting a car is highly recommended to fully enjoy the open, coastal scenery.

Kitakyushu is a city where the scenic charm and historical heritage of a port town blend beautifully. Daytime strolls are delightful, but the nighttime atmosphere is just as dramatic.

Thanks to an excellent distribution system, a wide variety of fish can be enjoyed at peak freshness. Sushi is the top recommendation, as one would expect. With numerous sushi restaurants throughout the city, you can easily choose one that suits your taste and budget.

Experience the Sea and Sky in the Chikuzen Genkai Area

Situated along the coast between Kitakyushu and Fukuoka, the Chikuzen Genkai area is largely designated as a national park. It offers rich natural scenery and a sense of the local spiritual traditions that have taken root here.

Feel the Sea Breeze on a Cycling Trip

Cycling is one of the best ways to experience the charm of this area. A dedicated cycling path stretches for 34 km along the coastline. At the Okagaki Tourist Station “Hokuto Shichisei,” you can rent bicycles suited to your fitness and experience level, including electric-assisted bikes and sport bikes.

The surrounding area is home to many orchards that benefit from the warm climate. Along National Route 495, you’ll also find small roadside stands selling seasonal fruits.

Miyajidake-jinja Shrine

With a history spanning more than 1,800 years, this shrine is cherished as a spiritual spot known for bringing good fortune and business prosperity. The massive shimenawa rope hanging in front of the main hall is said to be the largest in Japan among those replaced annually.

From the Editorial Team:
The shrine is also famous for the “Path of Light,” when the setting sun illuminates the approach in a perfectly straight line. This phenomenon can be seen in February and October.

Kagami no Umi (Fukutsu Sea Mirror)

A 15-minute walk from Miyajidake-jinja Shrine leads you to a three-kilometer stretch of shallow, sandy shoreline. During low tide on days with large or medium tides, the wet sand reflects the sky like a mirror, creating a breathtaking scene. Be sure to capture some magical photos!

It consists of three sites located across the sea: Hetsu-miya in the mainland of Munakata City, Nakatsu-miya on Oshima Island, and Okitsu-miya on Okinoshima Island.
