Top spots for stunning pristine nature on Iki Island

Spellbinding untouched landscapes await on the remote island of Iki in Nagasaki, just an hour by hydrofoil from Hakata Port in Fukuoka. Venture here to encounter stunning panoramic views of the horizon and magnificent scenery sculpted by the hand of nature. This one-of-a-kind land, extolled in myths and legends, is today a popular “power spot.” You won’t be able to stop snapping pics on this irresistibly photogenic island trip!

Most people get around the island by bus or rental car, but sports lovers are sure to love the rental electric bicycles readily available.

Saruiwa

A miraculous rock formation naturally shaped into the profile of a monkey. According to local lore, this is one of the eight “Kannon Pillars,” built by gods to protect the island from being washed out to sea. Why not try taking the trick-art pic where you mimic a monkey’s face or pose as if talking to the famous ape?

Sakyobana

A cape at the tip of Yawata Peninsula on Iki Island’s east coast. Feel the power and awe of nature gazing at the roughly 1 km stretch of sheer cliffs.

Like Saruiwa, the rare rock formation at the end of the cape is also considered one of the “Kannon Pillars.”

Oni no Ashiato (Ogre's Footprint)

Ages of wave erosion eventually opened this 110 meter portal. Local legend tells that it was created by “the footprints of an ogre trying to catch a whale.” Marvelous sunset views make this an ever beloved scenic spot.

Smiling Gorilla Rock

Take a close look at this rock. Doesn’t it look like the profile of a smiling gorilla? This rock, formed through erosion by ocean winds, is a hidden spot in Makizaki Park, the same place as the “Oni no Ashiato” (Ogre’s Footprint). Drop by to see the unique Gorilla Rock on your way to Saruiwa (Monkey Rock) mentioned earlier.

Harahoge Jizo

In Yahataura, also known as the “Village of Diving Women” (Ama no Sato), these sacred stone figures stand, known as Jizo. During high tide, the sea level rises up to their chest! These six Jizo statues are believed to save people from the pain and anguish of the six realms of Buddhism (Hell, Hungry Ghosts, Animals, Ashura, Humans, Heaven).

Takenotsuji

The highest mountain on Iki Island rises 212.8m above sea level. The observation deck at the summit is the ideal lookout for panoramic views of the entire island. On clear days, you can see all the way to Kyushu Island, while at night the sky is filled with stars.
