The 2025 World Expo (Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan) is currently being held on Yumeshima, an artificial island in Osaka, until October 13. Under the theme “Designing a Future Society for Our Lives,” the Expo showcases cutting-edge technologies and cultures from Japan and around the world. Below, find out about some of the must-see pavilions and tips on how to make the most of your visit!
A pavilion where visitors can experience the future of urban life, featuring insights and technologies from various fields such as transportation and mobility, environment and energy, as well as food and agriculture.
ALICE SYSTEM

A futuristic public transportation system where a single cabin autonomously connects to cars, trains, airplanes, and ships, seamlessly transporting passengers to their destination. The concept model on display showcases an innovative travel experience, with cabin windows projecting immersive visual connections to remote locations such as homes, restaurants, and hospitals. Additionally, a robotic arm beside the seat pours drinks, offering a glimpse into the future of smart and seamless travel.
Aerial Sense Device
This innovative device uses the latest ultrasonic technology to allow visitors to physically “touch” a 3D-projected character named “Niteon,” making it feel as if it truly exists. Additionally, Niteon emits sounds that can only be heard by the person interacting with it. This exhibit envisions a future allowing for physical communication and interaction with people in distant locations, bridging the gap between the real and virtual worlds.
Highlight 2: Osaka Healthcare Pavilion
This pavilion offers visitors a chance to meet their future selves 25 years from now by analyzing their health data on the spot. It provides an interactive experience of future healthcare and lifestyle innovations. In the “Body Measuring Pod,” visitors can assess the health of their musculoskeletal system, cardiovascular system, skin, hair, and more, with rankings calculated based on their condition. Using this data, a visual representation of their future selves 25 years later is displayed on the screen. Additionally, visitors can explore cutting-edge healthcare solutions, such as the “Personal Food Stand,” where AI analyzes their physical condition and recommends personalized nutrients and food ingredients. From beauty and wellness to advanced medical technologies, this pavilion offers a glimpse into the future of health and well-being from multiple perspectives.
Highlight 3: KANSAI PAVILION

Nine prefectures—Shiga, Kyoto, Hyogo, Nara, Wakayama, Tottori, Tokushima, Fukui, and Mie—come together in this pavilion to showcase their history, culture, and visions for the present and future. In the Kyoto Zone, exhibits are regularly updated to highlight the charm of Kyoto through six themes: culture, food, industry, environment, life, and tourism. Fukui Prefecture, home to one of the world’s largest dinosaur museums, offers a powerful VR experience with a four-sided video that takes visitors on a journey from the era of the flourishing of dinosaurs to their extinction and into the future, along with interactive fossil excavation experiences. Each region presents its unique cultural identity through engaging and innovative exhibits.
Tips for Enjoying the Expo
Tip 1: How Many Pavilions Can You Visit in a Day?
With a vast venue spanning approximately 155 hectares (about three times the size of Universal Studios Japan), exploring the entire expo in one day is unrealistic. Including breaks, a realistic goal is visiting around four to five pavilions in a day. If you prefer to fully immerse yourself, two to three pavilions would be a good benchmark.
Tip 2: Food & Dining

The expo features around 100 dining options across the venue. Expect a variety of sustainable food choices, such as conveyor belt sushi offering sushi made mainly from farm-raised fish (available while supplies last), gluten-free ramen, and traditional Japanese sweets crafted with plant-based superfoods. Enjoy a culinary journey through both Japanese and global cuisine!
Tip 3: Heat Protection
Ice Cool Spot
Ice Cool Spot
To help visitors stay cool, the expo has implemented air-conditioned areas in crowded spots, free water refill stations, and heat-resistant asphalt. In the “Progress Plaza” in the southwestern part of the venue, a rest area called the “Ice Cool Spot” offers a unique cooling experience. It uses natural energy-powered air conditioning to create ice, which then radiates cool air, providing a gentle way to lower body temperature.
Tip 4: Baggage Rules
Suitcases, carry-on luggage, and carts are not allowed inside the venue. However, bags within the following dimensions—width: 60 cm, depth: 90 cm, height: 40 cm—are permitted (excluding wheeled luggage). For those with large bags, temporary storage spots are available at Bentencho Station and Sakurajima Station for 1,000 yen per item.
Tickets
There are three ways to purchase tickets for the Expo:
1. Register for an “EXPO ID” – This allows you to purchase tickets, reserve your visit date and time, and book pavilion or event entry in advance.
2. Purchase a “Simple Admission Ticket” – Available through a dedicated website, this option does not require an EXPO ID or prior reservations. However, it does not allow bookings or changes for pavilions and events that require reservations.
3. Buy a Same-Day Ticket at the Entrance – Tickets can be purchased at ticket booths near the entrance gates. However, on highly crowded days, sales may be suspended, with prior notice given on the official website.

I am from Shizuoka, with Mount Fuji in the background. I lived in Korea for four years and in China for 11 years. I majored in literature for my undergraduate and graduate degrees. I love strolling around in a city, listening to pop music, taking a ride in trains and cars, and visiting observatories in high-rise buildings. I have a sweet tooth.
