Take a Leisurely Stroll Through the Historic Kurayoshi Shirakabe Storehouse District!
Retro Townscape of White Walls and Red Roofs
The unique charm of this town lies in its nostalgic scenery, preserved for over 200 years. The area housing the Kurayoshi Shirakabe Storehouse District originally developed as a castle town and later flourished as a commercial hub during the Edo period (1603–1868). Many of the buildings constructed from the Edo through the Meiji period (1868–1912) still stand today, retaining their historic atmosphere. The harmonious blend of white walls and red roofs creates a photogenic townscape that’s sure to impress!
The red roofs stand out beautifully against the blue sky.
There is also a guesthouse that has been renovated from a 100-year-old townhouse.
The Tamagawa River, which flows right next to the old buildings, boasts crystal-clear water, where vibrant fish swim energetically.
Historically, the Tamagawa River served as a boundary dividing the areas where craftsmen and merchants lived. Some buildings allow visitors to glimpse into their inner courtyards and grounds.
A notable feature from the era is the kido (wooden gates), which merchants strategically placed at the back of their buildings to access the streets.Nearby, Mount Utsubuki, standing at an elevation of 204 meters, complements the scenery with its natural beauty, harmonizing perfectly with the Tamagawa River.

Recommended Spot 2: Aka-gawara Ichigokan
This building, originally a soy sauce factory constructed during the Taisho era (1912–1926), has been renovated and now offers a variety of Tottori’s specialty products, local sake, and crafts. It’s the perfect place to pick up souvenirs! I chose a local delicacy—senbei crackers infused with the rich flavor of Matsuba crab. The shop also sells light snacks such as frozen melon bread filled with whipped cream, known as “ice melon bread,” which is perfect for enjoying as you stroll through the district.
