Hirosaki Park is one of the most famous cherry blossom sites in Japan. The Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival takes place in the park – the former Hirosaki Castle grounds – every year from mid April to early May. There are some 5,000 cherry trees in the park. Hirosaki was a frontrunner in adopting aspects of Western culture in the late 19th century and many Western-style structures can still be seen here and there in the city.
You will also see a lot of apple pie shops, as the city and area are well known apple producers.
In the distance stands the beautiful and imposing Mt. Iwaki, also known as the “Mt. Fuji of Tsugaru.” (Tsugaru is the old name for Aomori.) Cherry blossoms around the mountain are beautiful and also worth seeing. At the Tsugaruhan Neputamura you can see displays of elegant fan-shaped neputa lanterns. For nighttime entertainment, dropping in a Japanese-style izakaya pub and catching a live Tsugaru-shamisen performance would be an interesting experience. The nearby Aoni Onsen in Kuroishi City is known as a quiet hot springs inn in the mountains that still uses old-style lamps.
