Hozukyo Gorge is one of Kyoto’s most scenic valleys, renowned for its breathtaking autumn foliage. The Hozu River winding through the gorge, framed by mountains ablaze with vibrant fall colors, creates an unforgettable landscape. Flowing through the Yamashina area, the Yamashina Canal forms part of the historic Lake Biwa Canal. Completed in 1890, the Lake Biwa Canal is a man-made waterway that brings water from Lake Biwa to Kyoto. The approximately 4-km walking path is lined with maple trees that create a stunning tunnel of autumn foliage. From October 2 to December 6, 2026, visitors can also enjoy the seasonal Lake Biwa Canal Cruise, offering beautiful views of the autumn colors from the water (advance reservations required).
