2. Yamashina Canal (Lake Biwa Canal)

Flowing through the Yamashina area, the Yamashina Canal forms part of the historic Lake Biwa Canal. Completed in 1890, the Lake Biwa Canal is a man-made waterway that brings water from Lake Biwa to Kyoto. The approximately 4-km walking path is lined with maple trees that create a stunning tunnel of autumn foliage. From October 2 to December 6, 2026, visitors can also enjoy the seasonal Lake Biwa Canal Cruise, offering beautiful views of the autumn colors from the water (advance reservations required).
