Kyoto in Spring

Flowers of Spring

Flowers can be enjoyed at various places such as shrines, temples, and gardens in every season. Away from the hustle and bustle of the crowded center of the city, enjoy the spring flowers.

Nagaoka Tenmangu Shrine / Hachijoga-ike Pond (Nagaokakyo City)

Nagaoka Tenmangu enshrines Sugawara Michizane, a scholar and political figure of the 9th century. Deep red Kirishima azaleas on both sides of the approach are at their best in late April.

Peak season: late April

Muko-jinja Shrine (Muko City)

This is a venerable shrine built in 718. The main hall is designated a National Important Cultural Property. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom, and the approach looks like a pink tunnel.

Peak season: early April

Byodoin (Uji City)

Japanese wisteria in Byodoin Temple are considered to be about 280 years old. Long, pale purple clusters hang from wide trellises and create an elegant atmosphere.

Peak season: late April or mid-April to early May

Tamagawa Zutsumi (Ide Town)

About 500 cherry blossoms bloom. Lit up by lanterns in the evening, they create fine scenery during the Cherry Blossom Festival in early April. Weeping cherry blossoms and field mustard flowers are also beautiful at nearby Jizozen-in Temple.

Sewari Zutsumi (Yawata City)

About a 1.4 km tunnel of cherry blossoms stretches along a bank between the Uji River and Kizu River. You can see the whole of this cherry blossom line from the 25-meter-high observatory of Sakura Deaikan.
