“animate” is famous as a chain of specialty stores for anime, comics, and games. The animate Ikebukuro Flagship Store is going through a big renovation with a grand opening on March 16, 2023. This beloved hub for anime and manga fans has long stood as a symbol of the Ikebukuro neighborhood which, alongside its counterpart Akihabara, form Tokyo’s “subculture towns.” The selection of merchandise is endless, not to mention popular anime goods. More than just shopping, exhibitions and events also abound. Head to animate’s first stage, the “animate Theater” on the 2nd basement floor, to catch performances and talk shows in a wide-open space. Two event halls, an exhibition gallery and a café round out the attractions.
